Leaders of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), the opposition party in Andhra Pradesh, expressed deep grief over the tragic death of a 25-year-old woman who was declared brain-dead following an assault. The leaders extended their condolences to the bereaved family and criticised the government’s inability to protect women.
Speaking to the media outside a government general hospital in Guntur, former cabinet minister Merugu Nagarjuna criticised the handling of the case and the government’s delayed response. He pointed out the absence of the responsible minister during the incident and emphasised the vulnerability women face without robust safety measures like the Disha App. “Women remain unprotected under the current government’s tenure,” Nagarjuna said. He also noted that YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had responded swiftly and would visit Sahana’s family to offer his condolences in person.
Former minister Vidadala Rajini added that women’s safety has deteriorated under the current government. She highlighted this case as a clear example of this growing insecurity and reiterated that YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s administration had introduced the Disha Act for women’s protection. “Immediate action must be taken to ensure justice for Sahana,” Rajini said.
The young woman died under suspicious circumstances after being assaulted by Naveen, a known rowdy sheeter, following a financial dispute. The two had a relationship, and during an argument, Naveen allegedly attacked her, causing severe head injuries. He later admitted her to the hospital, but she passed away after several days of treatment. Naveen has been arrested, and further investigations are underway.
